SharePoint 2013 Configuration Wizard Error – The specified user is a local account . Local account should only be used in stand alone mode
I was going through installation of SharePoint 2013 on my local machine as a Single Server farm (both SP and Database on same server)
Its a VM setup on Hyper-V with the following environment:
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- SharePoint 2013 SP1
- SQL Server 2012 SP2
After installation of SQL Server and SharePoint, I was going through the SharePoint Configuration Wizard. When I tried to create a new farm, I got “Specify Confguration Database Settings” page, where I typed the DB Server, DB name, Username and Password. But when I clicked Next, I got this error
“The specified user is a local account . Local account should only be used in stand alone mode”
Since I dont have a domain or AD setup here, I had to go with a different route.
I opened the SharePoint 2013 Management Shell from Windows Server Metro Tiles and typed the following:

Dont panic if it takes longer to get to the prompt, as it has to create the Admin and the ConfigDB in the Database.
Once complete, you can reopen the Configuration Wizard and run again. You will now see the Database as configured before and can proceed with next steps.
